The 14 Best Cookbooks of Fall 2020

Image
The 14 Best Cookbooks of Fall 2020 Our favorite new books of the season, selected by Food reporters and editors from The New York Times. In “Coconut & Sambal” (Bloomsbury, $35), Lara Lee, a chef living in London, explores her Indonesian roots, using her grandmother’s cooking as a jumping-off point. (Ms. Lee’s mother is Australian, and her father Chinese-Indonesian.) There are classic dishes: a chicken satay with a spicy peanut sauce, a beef rendang bubbling away in coconut milk bath that reduces so much it disappears, a bountiful gado-gado. But Ms. Lee keeps an eye toward innovation and substitutions. Desserts include a no-churn peanut and banana ice cream and kue pandan dan kelapa, a bright green pandan-and-coconut cake inspired by a treat her grandmother used to make. The latter can be made with raspberries, though it’s worth finding the pandan leaves for a dessert that, much like the book itself, is sweet but never cloying. KRISTEN CHAMBROT ‘ East: 120 Vegan and Vegetar...

Time for the 'Speed-Hump' 🐪 09/30/2020 C_K

Image
Good morning everyone! I do hope this day finds everyone doing well! So, it's Hump-Day! Here we are, heading into the middle of the week! I had actually almost dozed back off while sitting in my chair (which is something I haven't done in YEARS!) until a state trooper decided to do a 'flip' in front of the house, turned the siren on and floored it lol. Ahhhhh, the sound of revved engines first thing of the morning, it can get the blood flowing better than coffee at times lmao. Yes, I'm a muscle car freak and love the sound of loud mufflers, well, since you can't run open headers legally lol. Last time I got to go to the Kinston Drag Strip ^^^ and watch my brother make a few passes. I miss the 'early' days of me and the hubby dating. Our standard weekend was Friday night was spent riding an hour or so out to the Aurora/Bayview Ferry, riding the ferry across (like a 10 minute ride, if that), then driving another hour or so home from the opposite side lol....

How to Peel a Hard Boiled Egg

Image
STEP ONE: Crackle the egg all over by tapping it on your counter. STEP TWO: Roll the egg gently between your hands to loosen the shell. STEP THREE: Peel the egg starting at the large end. If you hold the egg under cold running water or dip it in a bowl of water this will help remove the shell. When hard boiling eggs always use eggs that have been in the fridge a few days as they are easier to peel than fresh eggs. Keep hard boiled eggs refrigerated in their shell and use within one week. 10 facts about sloths, nature's slowest animals

Image
10 facts about sloths, nature's slowest animals By guest blogger Aaron Lax Found in Central and South America, sloths call the tall trees their home, as their long claws make it difficult for them to walk on the ground. World Animal Protection works around the globe to protect wild animals like sloths,  elephants ,  otters , and  tigers , and keep them in their natural habitats instead of allowing them to be subjected to the cruelty of the  animal entertainment industry  or  exotic pet trade . Read on to find out more about these unique animals and why they belong in the wild. 10 interesting facts about sloths 1. It Takes Two There are two types of sloth, two-toed and three-toed. However, this can get confusing as both types have three claws, or ‘toes’, on their hind limbs. In reality, the ‘two-toed’ sloth should really be called the ‘two-fingered’ sloth as the difference between them both can be found on their  front limbs . 2. Big Brother The mo...

Tiny Stray Kitten Chooses Dog As Its New Mother

Tiny Stray Kitten Chooses Dog As Its New Mother September 24, 2020  by  William Lewis Not all animals have the quality of life they deserve. Many of them depend on the kind people who see them wandering the streets, and many of them are also born without ever seeing their mother again. Something like this seems to have happened to this little kitten. The tiny baby, apparently from Greece, was spotted outside a house with a dog at least 15 times bigger than him. Photo credit:  The Dodo The kitten was not afraid, on the contrary, he approached in a friendly way and also found a loving response. The dog named Toast received him with much affection, began to lick him and even allowed him to lie down on her food. Photo credit:  The Dodo Thus began a beautiful relationship. Toast adopted it as his own and both have been learning the habits of the other. While the little kitty understood that Toast’s food bowl is not the place to rest, Toast now bathes him with love. When h...

And Just Like That, It's Friday!!! 😯 09/25/2020

Good morning everyone! I do hope everyone is doing well and has had a decent week so far. We've made it this far through the week, another good push and it's the weekend!!! I finally actually SAW Oldest Daughter for more than a split second when she got home from work yesterday. I knew how hard it was going to be on both her and "R" when he left. When she got home from taking him to the train station (an hour, hour and a half drive one way to the closest one), I saw nothing but a blur as she came in, bypassed the living room and headed straight up stairs. I only caught a glimpse of her that evening when I texted her and told her I had hubby bring us home a roast beef sandwich. She came down long enough to grab the bag and head straight back up stairs, I saw just enough to see her eyes were swollen and red 😢 and I knew enough to just let her be. Figured I'd at least 'see' her when she went to work the next morning but nope, she left her shoes in the truc...

Curious puppy rescued from backyard drain cover

Image
Curious puppy rescued from backyard drain cover Ben Hooper Sept. 21 (UPI) --  Firefighters in Pennsylvania came to the rescue of a puppy who went wandering in her owner's back yard and ended up with her head stuck through the middle of a drain lid. The  Palmer Municipal Fire Department said  a crew responded to the home Sunday when the owners called to report the curious puppy's head was stuck through the middle of a drain cover. "When dispatched to an animal rescue today, PMFD had no idea they would be in store for such a delicate and prolonged extrication," the department said. Firefighters said they were eventually able to free the canine without any injuries. CAM

It's Hump-Day Already?!!??!? 😯 09/23/2020 C_K

Wow! It's already Hump-Day! I guess it's true that time flies when you're having fun, or in my case, have good company! I do hope everyone is doing well this fine Hump-Day! Things are going better around here and I'm actually kind of sad that it's Wednesday already. For those around on either of last week's posts, Hump-Day or Friday, y'all know that Oldest Daughter's first ever "boyfriend" came down from where he lives in New York Last Thursday. Well, they were here at the house Saturday afternoon because we had planned on grilling out for Oldest Daughter's birthday and in talking with "R" I found out that he was actually off of work until tomorrow. The only reason he was going back to New York on Sunday was because he didn't want to dip into his savings and couldn't afford to stay at the hotel longer, so momma to the rescue.  Now, we aren't rich and it's very seldom that we ever have extra money but what we do ha...

Bear Stories Are Always Fun

Image
Bear Stories Are Always Fun … I clicked on the light and stared through the window onto my porch — into the eyes of an adult grizzly licking my barbecue grill three feet away. Startled, the bear dashed away as quickly as I stepped back, but that rush beat the devil out of any cup of coffee. In my case, I’d been lax on cleaning or locking up attractants, any odors that can attract a hungry bear. A grizzly’s sense of smell is the stuff of legend. They are capable of locating a carcass under water, sniffing out crumbs dropped from your campsite lunch, and chances are, they even know what you had for breakfast as you hike down a trail. My biologist friend, Kate Kendall, a veteran bear researcher, told me that anecdotally, they’ve seen grizzlies sniff out a meal a half mile away. After my late-night visit, I stopped composting and brought in the bird feeders. When I built a barn for my horses, the grain room was made to be secure from four-inch claws. If I’ve had unwelcome visitors since, R...

BOILS

A  boil   is a  skin   infection that starts in a  hair   follicle or oil gland. At first, the skin turns red in the area of the infection, and a tender lump develops. After four to seven days, the lump starts turning white as pus collects under the skin. The most common places for boils to appear are on the face, neck, armpits, shoulders, and buttocks. When one forms on the eyelid, it is called a  sty . If several boils appear in a group, this is a more serious type of infection called a  carbuncle . Causes of Boils Most boils are caused by a germ (staphylococcal bacteria). This germ enters the body through tiny nicks or cuts in the skin or can travel down the  hair  to the follicle. These health problems make people more susceptible to skin infections: Diabetes Problems with the immune system Poor  nutrition Poor hygiene Exposure to harsh chemicals that irritate the skin Symptoms of Boils A boil starts as a hard, red, painf...
